Colposcopic Diagnosis of Vaginal Ulcerations in Toxic Shock Syndrome

WILLIAM E. CROWDER, JR, MD and FRANCIS L. SHANNON, MD

From the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and of Emergency Medicine, Naval Regional Medical Center, Long Beach, California

Abstract

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) has been associated with tampon use and the presence of Staphylococcus aurcus in the vaginal vault. Vaginal mucosal lesions have been noted as a macroscopic finding in the isolated case reports; however, the use of colposcopy to demonstrate the presence of vaginal microulcerations in patients with TSS has rarely been reported. For this reason, 3 patients with TSS are presented in whom colposcopy revealed vaginal microulcerations in the presence of a grossly normal pelvic examination. The potential significance of this finding is discussed. (Obstet Gynecol 61:50S, 1983)
