RAPE: MANAGEMENT IN A NONINSTITUTIONAL SETTING

Abiodun Solola, MD, DPH, Cheryl Scott, MSSW, Herbette Severs and Julia Howell, MS, MBA

From the Division of Ambulatory and Community Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Tennessee College of Medicine; and the Rape Crisis Program, Memphis, Tennessee

Six hundred twenty-one consecutive female victims of rape were seen during 1980 in the noninstitutional Rape Crisis Program by professionally trained, nonphysician personnel. Physician manpower was spared and crisis management and recovery of the victim were enhanced by early crisis intervention, consistent follow-up counseling, and elimination of victim exposure to the customarily intensive activity of traditional institutional settings.
