The Effects of Chronic Gastrointestinal Medication on the Fetus and Neonate

FRANK R. WITTER, MD, THEODORE M. KING, MD, PhD and DAVID A. BLAKE, PhD

From the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland

Abstract

The possible adverse effects of chronic ingestion of gastrointestinal medication on the fetus and neonate are reviewed. In view of the paucity of information on these drugs, it has been difficult to establish causality. This situation is discussed, and individual drugs are reviewed by gastrointestinal indication for their possible adverse effects.
