FOREIGN BODY REACTION TO THE INTRAPERITONEAL USE OF AVITENE

S A Park, MD, C. Giannattasio, MD and M L Tancer, MD

From the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and of Pathology, The Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, Brooklyn, New York

Abstract

A case is reported in which microcrystalline collagen hemostat (Avitene) was used to control bleeding in conservative ovarian surgery. At subsequent reoperation, an extensive proliferative granulomatous response to this substance was noted. The case raises the question of tissue reaction to Avitene used within the peritoneal cavity.
