SELECTIVE ARTERIAL INFUSION OF PITRESSIN FOR THE CONTROL OF PUERPERAL HEMORRHAGE AFTER HYPOGASTRIC ARTERY LIGATION

Javier F. Magrina, MD, Robert E. Moffat, MD, Byron ]. Masterson, MD and Kermit E. Krantz, MD, Litt D

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas

A case of persistent puerperal hemorrhage following hysterectomy and hypogastric artery ligation was successfully managed by selective arterial infusion of vasopressin (Pitressin). If permitted by the patient's condition and if adequate facilities and personnel are available, selective arterial infusion of Pitressin and/or embolization should be considered to control puerperal hemorrhage before surgical intervention.
