MIDGUT VOLVULUS FOLLOWING CESAREAN SECTION

DONALD M. CODER, MD, FACS, LIONEL J. SCHEWITZ, MD, FACOG and HUGH C. FALLS, MD, FACOG

Lake Forest Hospital. Lake Forest. Illinois.

Abstract

Total midgut volvulus and gangrene due to a congenially elongated mesentery in a 27-year-old primipara occurred 3 days after cesarean section. All of the small bowel distal to the duodenum except for 12 inches of jejunum was resected, and the patient survived. This case and the literature concerning volvulus in pregnancy are reviewed here, and suggestions for prevention and treatment are made.
