Hereditary Spherocytosis with Hemolytic Crisis During Pregnancy Treatment by Splenectomy

From the Division of Hematology, Department of Medicine, Department of Surgery, and Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, New York, New York.

Hemolytic anemia was detected in 2 young women in the second trimester of pregnancy. The diagnosis of hereditary spherocytosis was made, and the patients underwent uneventful splenectomy. Five similar cases from the literature are reviewed.
