Abstract

Forty-six female offspring of mothers who took stilbestrol during pregnancy and 6 other women in whom vaginal adenosis was suspected were subjected to colposcopy and directed vaginal biopsy. In every case in which colposcopy suggested vaginal adenosis it was confirmed by biopsy. Several characteristic colposcopic patterns of the vaginal mucous membrane were identified and correlated with histologic changes in tissue biopsy specimens. Colposcopy is felt to be a particularly useful method for evaluating girls at risk.
