From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Catholic University. Rome, Italy.
A case of molar pregnancy associated with ascites is described. The results of serial determinations of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), estrogens, pregnanediol, and pregnanetriol in the urine of the patient before and after evacuation of the mole and during the clinical management of the patient, which included repeated paracentesis and curettage, are also presented. The clinical observations and biochemical findings suggest that the ascites resulted from ovarian hyperstimulation by the endogenous HCG and show that the syndrome can be successfully managed by conservative treatment.
