From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of Medicine, Kyoto University, Kyoto. Japan.

The effects of 75 mg of vaginally administered prostaglandin F2A on human corpora lutea were investigated by enzyme histochemistry and electron microscopy in 3 women at the mid-luteal phase and in I woman at 4 weeks of gestation. Plasma progesterone and 17Ahydroxyprogesterone levels were also measured before and after the administration of PGF2A No significant effects were observed histochemically and electronmicroscopically on corpora lutea menstruations or on plasma progesterone levels. In the pregnant patient, gestation was terminated by the PGF2A administration; luteolysis was suggested ultrastructurally, and plasma progesterone and 17a-hydroxvprogesterone fell significantly. It is not known whether luteolysis preceded pregnancy termination in this patient or if luteal demise was a consequence of abortion.
