Intravenous leiomyomatosis probably occupies an intermediate taxonomic position between the usual uterine leiomyoma and benign metastasizing leiomyoma. Although masses of smooth muscle cells are seen within veins, and spread is frequently beyond the uterus, intravenous leiomyomatosis seems incapable of distant metastasis or of independent growth once the main tumor mass has been removed. When the veins of the broad ligament and pelvis are involved, the gross appearance at the operating table of linear plugs and cords of tumor is distinctive.
