Symptomatic Endometriosis in Teen-agers

A Reappraisal

JERRY L. BULLOCK, MD, FRED M. MASSEY, MD, FACOG and RICHARD D. GAMBRELL, MD, FACOG

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Current medical teaching, as well as medical literature, proposes that endometriosis occurs primarily in the reproductive years, being quite rare in patients less than 20 years of age. In an effort to reevaluate this assumption, the authors have studied 18 selected patients, aged 17 to 19 years, by endoscopy or culpotomy. Nine of these patients were found to have endometriosis. Case reports of 4 representative patients are presented, and criteria are presented for endoscopic evaluation of the teenage patient. Management is discussed, with particular reference to the young unmarried patient.
