Boric Acid Treatment of Vulvovaginal Candidiasis

TOMMY E. SWATE, MD and JOHN C. WEED, MD, FACOG

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ochsner Clinic and Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans, Louisiana.

After in vitro tests indicated that boric acid is fungistatic against Candida albicans, it was used to treat vulvovaginal candidiasis, with symptomatic relief in all 40 patients. None of the tested patients had detectable levels of boric acid in the seurm. Thirty-eight of the 40 patients had no recurrence of symptoms 30 days after therapy. Boric acid therapy for vulvovaginal candidiasis was found to be safe, effective, and inexpensive.
