Human Fetal Respiration

II Fate of Intra-amniotic Hypaque and 5lCr-Labeled Red Cells

JOHANN H. DUENHOELTER, MD and JACK A. PRITCHARD, MD, FACOG

Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, Dallas, Texas.

Hypaque and 51Cr-Iabeled maternal red cells were injected nearly simultaneously into the amniotic sacs of 2 fetuses about 24 hours before delivery. Both markers were identified subsequently in appreciable amounts in the intestinal tracts. Although even more 51Cr, equivalent to that in nearly 500 ml of amniotic fluid, was present in the lungs of each fetus, Hypaque accumulated in the lungs in very small amounts insufficient to produce radiopacity. Thus, the Hypaque inspired simultaneously with the 51Cr in the amniotic fluid must have been expired, absorbed, or both. Consequently, lack of roentgenographic evidence of Hypaque in the lungs subsequent to its injection into the amniotic sac does not preclude inspiration by the human fetus of appreciable volumes of amniotic fluid.
