One hundred and fourteen cases of twin pregnancy managed at the University of Colorado Medical Center over a 5-year period were studied to determine the effects of antepartum bed rest. Bed rest seems to improve perinatal mortality rates; however, when gestations of less than 30 weeks are excluded, bed rest does not significantly alter perinatal mortality rate or length of gestation. The incidence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants at all gestational ages over 30 weeks was decreased. It is concluded that bed rest encourages intrauterine growth in twin pregnancies.
