Treatment With Mycobacterium bovis (BCG)

The treatment of recurrent herpes genitalis is relatively ineffective. Immunotherapy with BCG vaccine is explored in this study because resistance to herpetic infection is thought to be cell-mediated, and recent reports show that BCG is an effective stimulator of cell-mediated immunity (CMI). Fifteen patients with frequently recurring Herpesvirus hominus (HVH) infections were selected for immunization with BCG; all have experienced a dramatic decrease in the frequency of recurrent infections. Patients who have become pregnant since vaccination have shown more recurrent lesions than the nonpregnant vaccinees. This suggests a diminution of CMI during pregnancy. The study suggests that nonspecific stimulation of CMI is effective in the treatment of recurrent HVH infections.
