On May 25, 1973, a group of cytopathologists met at the Center for Disease Control for the purpose of defining standards of adequacy of cytologic examination of the female genital tract. The purpose of this report is to convey the panel's conclusions to specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, who are among those most involved in obtaining cytologic specimens and interpreting cytodiagnoses.
