Diagnosis of Impending Late Abortion

R. TOAFF, MD and M. E. TOAFF, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology A, Hakiryah Maternity Hospital, Tel Aviv Medical Center, Tel Aviv University School of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Israel.

The common occurrence of urinary urgency and frequency as either the sole or the most pronounced symptoms in impending late abortion due to cervical incompetence is described. These urinary symptoms are related to the passive dilation of the cervix, not to the bulging of the membranes in the cervical canal. In a series of 16 cases, treatment by emergency cerclage resulted in a high rate of fetal salvage.
