This report presents an unusual problem concerning the misinterpretation of maternal-fetal ECG conduction through the electronic heart rate monitoring. It is possible during the electronic monitoring of labor that a dead fetus will conduct maternal ECG signals through a fetal scalp electrode which can be amplified through the Automatic Gain Control system of the monitoring equipment. Thus, the amplified maternal QRS wave triggers the rate computer and the maternal heart rate is erroneously displayed as that of the fetus. The importance of improving the computer input criteria of fetal heart rate (FHR) signals is stressed.
