Despite confirmation of the location of the placenta by sonography, gross bloody taps were observed in 8 of 132 amniocenteses. Five blood specimens of the 8 cases presenting evidence of fetal cells were cultivated and then subjected to karyotype analysis. It was found that a chromosome constitution of 46,XX mixed with 46,XY was present in 2 of 5 cases and 46,XX alone in the remaining 3 cases. Based on these results, the sex and the chromosome constitution of the fetus were predicted and subsequently confirmed. It is conceivable that cultivation of the blood from placental puncture may become an excellent diagnostic tool in detecting fetal genetic abnormalities, if any complication can be excluded.
