In pelvic exenteration for recurrent carcinoma of the cervix, exploratory laparotomy becomes the ultimate test. We have reviewed 79 patients who were so explored. In contrasting the patients who were explored and found inoperable with those who were technically operable, we were able to point out some of the problems with surgical exploration and outline a more appropriate model patient in whom recurrent cancer can be excised.
