Abstract
Markedly elevated amniotic fluid alpha-feloprotcin (AFP) levels were found in 9 cases of anencephaly, compared to 61 normal controls, 7 other fetal and 4 other obstetric abnormalities. Biochemical estimation of amniotic fluid AFP adds a new dimension to the early prenatal diagnosis of neural tube defects. The specificity and accuracy of amniolic fluid AFP testing must, however, still be established before routine use can be recommended.
