CYTOLOGIC SCREENING BY A NURSE ON AN IN-HOSPITAL POPULATION

CHARLOTTE LEVINSON, RN1 and ROBERT C. WALLACH, MD, FACOG2

1From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Beth Israel
2From the Medical Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York City, New York

In accordance with a state hospital code, a program to extend availability of cervical cytologic screening to all hospital in-patients has been established. Papanicolaou-stained cytologic smears are performed by a nurse with training from and under the supervision of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Patient and staff acceptance has been good. Abnormal findings have led to early diagnosis and treatment. The "Pap smear nurse" has been effective in extending cervical cytologic studies to an unscreened in-hospital population with minimum effort and expense.
