Abstract
Information has been presented on 291 patients who had the Dalkon Shield® inserted as an intrauterine contraceptive device, with a cumulative 2143 woman-months of use. A pregnancy rate of 10.1 per 100 woman-years was obtained for this group of women, with no apparent reduction with time over a 2-year interval. This device appears to offer no benefit as a contraceptive agent over other currently available, more effective means and cannot be recommended for continued use because of the high pregnancy rate associated with its use.
