Abstract
Three cases of aspiration of liquid vomitus are presented as a cause of maternal mortality. The etiology and pathology of this catastrophe arc discussed from an experimental and patho-physiologic point of view. Logical steps are detailed to allow for a rapid and accurate early diagnosis. The use of regional versus general anesthesia and the use of prophylactic antacids in labor are suggested as presentative measures. A treatment procedure, based on the physiologic alterations produced by the action of gastric acid on the pulmonary parenchyma, is outlined with special emphasis on massive, therapeutic dosages of adrenal corticosteroids.
