Pseudomyxoma Peritonei et Ovarii With Occult Neoplasms of Appendix

J. S. CAMPBELL, MD, P. LOU, MSc, J. P. FERGUSON, MB, I. KRONGOLD, MD, T. KEMENY, MD, D. M. MITTON, MD and N. ALLAN, MB

From the Department of Pathology, University of Ottawa, Department of Laboratory Medicine. Otlawa General Hospital, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Ottawa and Ottawa General Hospital, the Registry for Tissue Reactions to Drugs, and the Canadian Tumor Refference Centre of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Ottawa, Canada.

In 37 examples of pseudomyxoma peritonei with mutinous ovarian and appendicular neoplasms, ovarian minors were bilateral in 15 cases, but peritoneal involvement was often attributable to appendicular disease. In 5 rases, appendicular carcinoma was occult, without mucocele; in at least 3 cases, appendicular perforations were discovered only by histopathologic examination following laparotomy. Even if only occasionally to arrest appendicular carcinoma at in situ stages, appendectomy in patients with ovarian neoplasms is an obvious precaution.
