From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American University of Beirut School of Medicine, Beirut, Lebanon.
A fetus-like structure found in an ovarian cyst removed from a 27-year-old female is reported. The cyst contained tissues derived from the three germ layers. In addition, the interesting feature was the presence of a skull with orbits, rudiments of vertebral bodies, four limb buds, external genilalia, and long hair. The sex chroma tin was positive. This "homunculus" represents an aborted attempt at forming a fetus. Microscopic findings from the various regions of this structure, as well as histogenesis are discussed.
