Rubella Vaccination

A Critical Review

RONALD J. BOLOGNESE, MD and STEPHEN L. CORSON, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pennsylvania Hospital, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The literature pertaining to vaccination with live attenuated rubella virus and its relationship to pregnancy is reviewed. While no clinically affected babies have been reported, virus has been grown in fetal tissue after abortion was performed following inadvertent inoculation during, or just preceding, pregnancy. The implications are discussed as well as the apparent failure of the herd immunity concept.
