Survival Following Amniotic Fluid Embolism With Early Heparinization

ARTHUR F. CHUNG, MD and IRWIN R. MERKATZ, MD, FACOG

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical College. New York, New York 10021.

A diagnosis of amniotic fluid embolus was made as a primigravida developed shock at delivery. Emergency resuscitative measures were instituted prior to the onset of hemorrhage and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Prompt heparinization corrected the bleeding disorder and was significant in the patient's survival.
