Human Fetal Respiration

JOHANN H. DUENHOELTER, MD and JACK A. PRITCHARD, MD, FACOG

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, Dallas, Texas.

Evidence that the human immature fetus breathes in utero has been obtained using 51Cr-labeled red cells injected into the amniotic sac. There was a nearly linear correlation between the amount of 51Cr entrapped in the lungs per day and fetal weigh I. The 51Cr label was not confined just to the large bronchi but was distributed throughout the lung. These observations identify a functioning pathway for interchange of metabolitally important compounds between the fetus and surrounding amniotic fluid.
