Ultrasonic Diagnosis of Placenta Previa

KENNETH SCHEER, MD, FACOG

Depanment of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard Medical School, and the Boston Hospital for Women (Lying-In Division), Boston, Massachusetts.

A review of the first 2 years' experience on a large clinical service utilizing ultrasound for diagnosis of placenta previa reveals sonography to be an extremely useful noninvasive tool which promises to yield more accurate information with the accumulation of experience. Incidence of placenta previa in patients referred for suspicion of the condition was 11% (28 of 254). Of the 28 patients who had placenta previa, 17 were diagnosed outright, in 8 others the degree was underestimated, and in 3 it was totally missed. False positive diagnosis of previa was made in 10 of 226 patients (4.4%).
