The study was designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of duck cell modified rubella virus vaccine (Meruvax) given in early postpartum without pregnancy preventive in an investigation involving 455 women 14 to 45 years of age. Antibody responses and clinical reactions were roughly like those observed previously in women who had not recently delivered babies. None of the women became pregnant within 2 months after vaccination. The available evidence indicates that rubella virus vaccination in early postpartum constitutes low risk for fetal infection even when pregnancy preventive procedures are not employed.
