From the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York and University of South Florida College of Medicine, Tampa, Florida.
Fetal electroencephalography (FEEG) is monitored during the second stage of labor. When the vertex is delivered spontaneously, independent of fetal heart rate decelerations with head compression or maternal "pushing", the FEEG remains visually unchanged. During forceps application, and during traction, the FEEG rapidly changes from low voltage irregular activity to a flat line. After removal of the forceps the FEEG once again appears similar to that seen in other neonates delivered without forceps.
