ß-Hemolytic Streptococcus in a Population of Antepartum Patients

ROBERT J. SOKOL, MD and ROBERT S. WALKER, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Rochester, New York.

The results of 364 cultures of the uterine cervix obtained from a population of 307 antepartum patients being cared for in an obstetric clinic as of a specified date were reviewed. Positive cultures for p-hemolytic streptococcus were found in 11.1% of the patients, representing 10.4% of all cultures taken. A case of a fatal postpartum infection with nonhospital acquired nongroup A ß-hemolytic streptococcus demonstrated the potential pathogenicity of these organisms. Since ß-hemolytic streptococcus can be eliminated from the uterine cervix by antibiotic therapy, consideration of routine antepartum cervical culture and prophylactic therapy for ß-hemolytic streptococcus infection is recommended.
