Abstract
A preliminary report of results obtained with immediate postpartum insertion of the Safety Filament BowTM is presented. Insertions were done on the delivery table, immediately after placental expulsion, on 267 private and 334 clinic patients over a 2-year period. Followup was obtained on 239 private and 242 clinic patients. First year continuation rates were 86.5 and 71.0% in the two populations, respectively. Removals for side effects, spontaneous expulsions, and unplanned pregnancies were all markedly higher in the clinic patients than in the private patients. Possible causes for these differences are discussed. Preliminary data indicate that this method is a safe, efficient means for providing contraception to a selected patient population
