Pregnancy Outcome with Removal of Intrauterine Device

GREGORIO T. ALVIOR, JR, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Queens Hospital Center, Jamaica, New York

Abstract

In 201 patients who became pregnant with an intrauterine device (IUD) in situ a study was made to determine the comparative effects on pregnancy* outcome of removing the IUD or leaving it in the uterus. Among those in whom the device was left in situ, 48.44% aborted as compared with 29.62% from whom the IUD had been removed. The incidence of subsequent abortion was significantly higher (P 0.02 > 0.01) in the group in which the IUD was left in place. These data suggest that when continuation of the pregnancy is desired, the IUD should be removed
