Abstract

The amniotic fluid lecithin-sphingomyelin ratio was studied in a patient who delivered an anencephalic fetus. The ratio was 3:1 at the thirty.nfth week of gestation. Study of the anencephalic infant at 1 and 4 days of age showed minimal adrenal cortical function. We conclude that normal fetal adrenal cortical function is not required for the production of pulmonary surfactant
