Oxytocin Augmentation of Saline Abortions

FREDERICK W. HANSON, MD, TONY EASTON, MD, EUGENE O. HASLETT, MD and DAVID A. SACKS, MD

From the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California at Davis, School of Medicine. Davis, California

Abstract

Oxytocin has been employed to shorten the injection-abortion interval of saline abortions. The purpose of this study was to identity the role of oxytocin in a controlled clinical situation. Oxytocin significantly shortened the time required for abortion. A small, theoretically safer dose proved as effective as a larger dose.
