Placental Teratomas

T J JOSEPH, MD and P J VOGT, MD

From the Pathology Branch, Laboratory Service, Naval Hospital, California

Abstract

A case of a teratoma found within the fetal membranes of an otherwise normal placenta is presented. The distinction between a teratoma and fetus amorphus is made on the absence of an umbilical cord and the total disorganization of the tissue, in particular the axial skeleton. Theories on the origin of such teratomas arc reviewed.
