Abstract
Because potential hazards arc associated with mid-trimester abortions induced by inlraamniotic hypcrtonic saline, this study of hypertonic urea was undertaken. One hundred twenty patients were studied. The mean injection to abortion interval was 51.1 hours (median -45.5 hours) for those aborting during initial hospilalization (117 patients). Eighty percent of the group aborted within 72 hours. Complications of amniocentcsis, such as infection, bleeding and retained products, were similar to those experienced with hypertoiiic saline. None of the hazardous complications of hypcrtonic saline was experienced in this study jiopulation. Urea avoids the potentially lethal complications of accidental intravascular injection of hypertonic saline and is an effective aborlifacient.
