Abstract

Fulminating Streptococcus pyogenes pelvic inflammatory disease and peritonitis occurred in a previously healthy 29-year-old woman 4 months after a Dalkon Shield intrauterine device was inserted. Despite intensive treatment, the patient died of septic shock 63 hours after the onset of her illness. The clinical course and significance of severe Streptococcus pyogenes infections arc discussed. Other deaths from pelvic sepsis associated with intrauterine devices are reviewed.
