A Physician-Sponsored Community Nurse-Midwife Program

JOHN E. BURNETT, JR, MD, FACOG

From the Community Hospital of Springfield and Clark County, 2615 East High, Springfield, Ohio 45501.

Abstract

This report describes the development of a solution to community maternal health needs. A team comprised of the community's obstetricians and nurse-midwives offers total maternity cycle care to all women whose pregnancies are medically uncomplicated. The team approach provides nurse-midwifery care to all persons of normal obstetric prospectus, regardless of socioeconomic circumstance, continuously supervised by obstetricians so that physicians can become reoriented into pathologic obstetrics and gynecology. The various facets of the mechanism leading to the adaptation of this program are discussed. The program is projected as a viable and acceptable solution to maternal health service needs.
