Pregnancy and Regional Enteritis

R. A. NORTON, MD and J. F. PATTERSON, MD

From the Gastroenterology Service, Department of Medicine at the New England Medical Center Hospital, Boston, Mass 02111.

Abstract

Twenty female patients with regional enteritis confined to the ileum or to the ileum and jejunum were studied to determine the relationship between the bowel disease and pregnancy. Fifty-nine pregnancies occurred, with no increase in abortions or stillbirths after the onset of bowel disease. The frequency of active ileitis was not different in the patient-years with pregnancy as compared to those without. It is concluded that pregnancy and regional enteritis do not affect each other adversely.
