Ten-Year Experience with High Titer Anti-D Plasma for the Prevention of Rh Isoimmunization

EUGENE G. HAMILTON, MD, FACOG

From the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, St. Louis University School of Medicine and St. Mary's Health Center, St. Louis, Mo 63117.

Abstract

During the decade April 1, 1962 to March 31, 1972, over 1400 Rh negative women were given high titer anti-D plasma to prevent isoimmunization after each delivered an Rh positive baby. Of these 1400 women, 240 returned with 1 to 5 subsequent Rh positive pregnancies, for a total of 336. Three sensitizations occurred. Two of the babies did not require treatment but the third died, resulting in a perinatal mortality rate of about 3 per 1000 babies at risk. This form of prophylaxis is safe, effective and economic.
