Abstract
Of 1668 abortions performed by a single physician, using suction curettage, 6 resulted in uterine perforation. There were 3 hysterectomies with 1 death. Although the overall perforation rate of 3.6 per 1000 abortions was not remarkable, the risk of perforation increased from 0.0 per 1000 abortions at 10 weeks' gestation or less to 96.8 per 1000 abortions at 15 weeks or more. The physician appeared to be underestimating the length of gestation in women who were over 10 weeks from their last menstrual period.
