Abstract
Cryosurgery is an acceptable method for treating cervicitis. Its efficacy in treating preinvasive cancer of the cervix is being investigated. Much of the enthusiasm for this technic has been due to its very low incidence of side effects. Recently, 2 patients in a series of 300 developed pyometra after cryosurgery. Both had an intrauterine device in place. Four additional patients had an acute exacerbation of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease within the first week after cryosurgery. Possible etiologic factors are discussed.
