Oral Contraceptives and Erythema Nodosum

JOHN F. KIRBY, JR, MD and GEORGE H. KRAFT, MD

From the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington, School of Medicine, Seattle, Wash 98105.

Abstract

Erythema nodosum is a rare complication of oral contraceptives. Rheumatic symptoms of various types are seen more frequently, and may represent the earliest manifestations of underlying rheumatic disorders. The case of erythema nodosum presented confirms that symptoms are reversed by withdrawing the offending contraceptive, but indicates that caution should be employed in placing the patient on another estrogenic-progestational agent.
