Cervical Mucus, Vaginal Cytology and Steroid Excretion in Recurrent Abortion

Abstract

Cervical mucus ferning indicating some degree of hormone deficiency was observed in 40 of 56 patients with recurrent abortion; these 40 patients were treated with oral dydrogesterone on a double-blind basis. Eighty-five percent of the patients delivered healthy babies, but no direct effect or improved result could be seen when the active drug was used. Cervical mucus ferning and an abnormal karyopyknotic index were found in vaginal smears from patients with a general hormone deficiency, as measured by total estrogens pregnanediol and human chorionic gonadotrophin levels. A detailed clinical plan is presented for the specific treatment of recurrent abortion.
