ANNE COLSTON WENTZ, MD and THEODORE M. KING, MD, FACOG

From the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Md 21205.

Abstract

Extensive myometrial necrosis occurred after the injection of hypertonic saline to terminate pregnancy after prostaglandin F failed to induce abortion. Myometrial necrosis was produced in pregnant rhesus monkeys by the injection of hypertonic saline. Termination of pregnancy by this technic is contraindicated in a contracting or hypertonic uterus.
