Abstract
In an ultrasonic examination, the size of an echo from a structure contains diagnostically useful information, and in film echography this information is displayed by the gray scale of a film. Liquid-filled structures are then easily recognized by the dark internal background. Many soft-tissue organs may also be identified by the characteristic gray appearance of echoes from their internal content. In gynecology, the gray scale allows an accurate portrayal of the structure of lower abdominal masses. In obstetrics, it significantly increases the reliability with which the placenta can be displayed and major organs in the fetus identified.
